We can’t make a statement about anyone’s body in this culture without causing shame. Even here, in fitness-obsessed America, it is possible to shame someone for being overweight and also shame someone for being “unrealistically fit”. No BMI is a safe one. No weight, dress measurement, or pants size is acceptable in our culture’s critical eye.
But we’ve seen this potential for cruelty and we’ve risen up against it: “Take off more clothes and accept yourself!” – is the proposed solution, because nakedness translates as confidence in our society. The bikini has shackled our beauty, defining our value for years to come.
But you can’t shed shame by shedding clothes.
